onside law acts in ground-breaking sports law case

Onside Law, led by partner Chris Walsh, has recently advised the England and Wales Cricket Board in relation to a highly significant sports law case in the Commercial Court arising out of a contested application for a witness summons (England and Wales Cricket Board Limited -v- Kaneria [2013] EWHC 1074 (Comm)). This case has confirmed the criteria which are to be taken into account when assessing whether any given sports disciplinary procedure is an “arbitration” for the purpose of the Arbitration Act 1996. We subsequently, successfully represented the ECB on its defence of Danish Kaneria’s appeal against a June 2012 Disciplinary Panel finding that he was guilty of corrupt spot-fixing. Mr Kaneria’s appeal against his life ban is to be heard at a later date.
